Abstract

Contrary to the practices and pretensions of the professions, a review of the well-considered thoughts of the people, devoid of the special trappings of statistics and the experiments of the scientist, but nevertheless fully as critical as a research monograph, may serve in many a place, we feel, to initiate much-needed remediation. Our experience leads us to believe that such an approach would have much to offer in formulating accident-prevention programs. In our study we secured "specifics" from drivers-pleasure, bus, truck, and taxi-from pedestrians, through newspaper clippings, and by direct observation of driving habits, some fourteen sources in all. One of these was interviews, conducted by students of psychology with several hundreds of drivers, many of whom were the survivors of serious collisions. The latter in many instances had tasted of the ashes of death but had lived to tell the tale. Such interviews yielded insight not to be had solely from inspections of wrecks, however thorough and objective. Treating as evidence rather than as fact all the data thus obtained we ruminated upon the returns. We tried throughout to employ the logical and statistical precautions characteristic of the rigorous evaluation of contradictory evidence. Such a course is unpopular. The path to be traveled is tortuous and stony. But scientific disinterestedness requires a willingness to hew to the truth and let the chips fall where they may. Abstract
